Favorite Christmas Decorations

Do you have Christmas decorations that are special to you?

Among my favorite decorations are a gift, a decoration that was my father-in-law’s and one that I made.

The Christmas Mop Doll was a gift from a good friend. She surprised me with it several years ago—and when I see it, I remember that visit vividly. When my daughter was helping me decorate this year, she got excited when she saw the doll, too.

I made the Noel wall hanging years ago—it took a long time, because I had to work on it in between teaching, shopping, preparing for the holidays and being a mother and wife. I was thrilled when it was finished. It has a place of honor every year.

The stained glass candle holder belonged to my beloved father-in-law.  He even fixed the candle holder by screwing the candle cup onto the front! He loved to make stained glass lamps and other decorations—although he didn’t make this. I honor his memory  by placing this candle holder in a special place.

Using these decorations every year honors friendship, the memory of loved ones and the energy I put into making the holiday special for my family.

Love the pictures and the memories!

  2. Dear Kathy,
The mop doll is a precious keepsake as well as the stained glass piece. The Noel Hanging represents hours of work. All three evoke fond memories and help you get into The Christmas Spirit which is all about love and sharing with family and friends.

The hand made ornaments for our Christmas Tree put me in the holiday mood as well. You have seen some of them: family photos of special times, crafted into little sculptures or decorated ornaments.

Thanks for sharing. Get better soon to totally enjoy this Blessed Season.

  3. We have a hooked wall hanging of a Santa that my mother-in-law made. It is lovely to have things we’ve made or that reminds of of special people. Just having these around makes me feel good during December.

I enjoy decorations made by my children. Many of them have disintegrated over the years so the ones that are left become more and more precious.

So glad you have those memories indelibly linked with various decorations. I do not celebrate Xmas, but my husband did, so we had the full complement of old and new ornaments and we both enjoyed putting them up. When he died, I got rid of all the ornaments, and I am mostly glad I did (storage issues)–but there are times when I look back fondly on special ornaments, now gone, and remember good times past. I don’t really miss the ornaments, except as they evoke wonderful memories. Now I have to rely on a rapidly waning memory bank. Happy holiday, merry Christmas, glad Festivus. Whatever.
P.S. I didn’t just trash those ornaments. I gave them to folks less fortunate than I and suppose those folks are building their own happy memories.

What a great idea to bequeath your decorations and ornaments to a family who may have none. It keeps the memories alive. Happy Festivus!

Not only do ornaments bring back fond memories, but also certain Christmas carols I associate with special times and people.
